Traditional Essay Pattern
What is an essay?
Essay (noun):
1. An attempt; a try; an experiment
2. A work of multi-paragraph, non-fiction writing that considers one subject (such as your cat, global warming, or how to get rich selling steak knives) from a certain point of view
Parts of the Traditional Essay:
INTRODUCTION:
The first paragraph getting your reader interested and getting your reader ready for your thesis.
THESIS STATEMENT: One or two sentences stating the main idea of the whole essay. In the traditional essay, the thesis statement is placed at the end of the introduction paragraph.
BODY PARAGRAPHS:
After the introduction, three or more additional paragraphs, to make supporting points that support the thesis and give your reader lots of specific details and evidence.
In each body paragraph there is a sentence stating the main idea (main point) of that body paragraph, called the TOPIC SENTENCE. The topic sentence of each body paragraph is stated at the beginning of the body paragraphs. Each body paragraph also include supporting points, specific details, examples and evidence.
Each topic sentence in the body paragraphs relates back to the thesis statement. All the specific support inside each body paragraph relates to the topic sentence of that paragraph.
So, everything in the essay relates back to the thesis statement. That’s why this pattern was invented — so that the essay is sure to have unity.
CONCLUSION:
The final paragraph after the body paragraphs to wrap up your essay and leave your reader with a final thought.
