Guidance for essay 3 Peer Review - Persuasive Letter

On your essay, underline the specific ethos, pathos, and logos used.
Divide into three groups and pass your essay to the person sitting on your right.

Addressed to…
Is the letter addressed to a specific (and an actual) legislator?
If so, put a check next to the legislator’s name.
If not, write “needs to be addressed to legislator” at top of letter
If unsure, put a “?” next to the name.

First Paragraph
In the first paragraph, does the writer state why he or she chose to write to this legislator in specific? If so, put a check next to the first paragraph. If not, write “what is the legislator’s stance on this issue?” at top of essay.
In the first paragraph, does the writer state what issue he or she is writing about and what course of action they are seeking from the legislator? If so, underline the issue.
If not, write “what is the issue?” and/or “what should be done?” at the top of the essay.

Quotes
Skim through the essay, looking for quotes. The essay needs a minimum of two quotes.
Put a check next to each quote. If the author does not have at least two, write “need 2 quotes,” at top of essay.
Are quotes properly cited?
…highway safety should be our number one concern,” (Clinton 82). Remember: (last name page number)
Put a check next to each quote. If the author does not have at least two, write “need 2 quotes,” at top of essay.
Are quotes properly integrated (attached to the writer’s own words) and explained by the author?

Put a check next to each quote. If the author does not have at least two, write “need 2 quotes,” at top of essay. If all quotes are not properly integrated, write “integrate quotes,” at top of essay.

Pass the essay you just peer reviewed to your right.
Using the peer review sheet, read through the essay you were handed, marking:
1. All spelling and grammar errors
2. Incorrectly cited quotes
3. Awkward sentences
4. Floating quotes (that need to be integrated)

At this point, it is expected that you have mastered:
Proper citations and quote integration
Topic sentences
Works cited pages
Thesis statements
Proper MLA format (1 inch margins, size 12 Times New Roman or Calibri, double spaced, no spaces between paragraphs)
Significant support
These will be graded heavily and should not be overlooked.

A persuasive letter needs to:
Utilize all three forms of rhetoric successfully
Include two scholarly quotes
Describe briefly why this issue is important to you
Offer a course of action that the legislator should take
Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the issue at hand and of the legislator’s view on it
Have sufficient support (facts, figures, statistics)
Be 1.5 pages single spaced, in proper letter format
All of these elements need to be included in order to produce a successful essay
