Guidance for essay 4 Peer Review - Argumentative Paper
Thesis statement
Is the thesis something that can be argued? If so, put a check next to it. If not, write, “This needs to be something that can be argued.”
If you can, offer a suggestion on how you would change the Thesis.
Topic Sentences
Read the first sentence of each paragraph, then skim each paragraph.
Does each topic sentences offer a general statement about what each paragraph will be about? * put a check next to each one that is effective. Circle topic sentences that are not effective.
Transitions
Reread the first sentence of each paragraph. Make sure each one has some sort of transition connecting it to the previous one. If it doesn’t, suggest a transition word:
In addition to causing cancer, Fluoride has also been linked to learning disabilities.
Furthermore, fluoride is unnecessary.
While fluoride is harmful and unnecessary, it is also costly.

Quotes
Skim through the essay and number each quote you see. (1, 2, 3…)
Write the final total at the top of the first page of the essay. There need to be a minimum of 5 quotes.
Look back at each quote. Make sure each quote is successfully integrated
and properly cited.
According to name in title of work, “All quotes need to be integrated into the essay” (Author’s last name page number).
According to Diana Hacker in The Bedford Handbook, “All quotes need to be integrated into the essay” (Hacker 87).
1. Write “INTEGRATE” next to quotes that are not successfully integrated
2. Write “CITE” next to quotes that are not properly cited
Research
Look over the works cited page:
Is the research from a variety of sources?
Are there at least 8 different sources cited?
Do all sources appear credible?
If any of these components are missing, make a note on the first page of the essay.
Intro and Conclusion
Read over first the introduction and then the conclusion.
Mark any errors you see (spelling, grammar, logic, etc.)
From reading just the intro and the conclusion, you should be able to pinpoint what specifically the author is arguing and what the final conclusion they have drawn is.
Provide comments and feedback directly on the essay to help the author improve their introduction and conclusion.
Support
Bracket the shortest paragraph. Read over it, and then:
Write one question you have.
Offer a suggestion for how the author can add more support.
Revision
Write your name on the bottom right of the paper and return the essay to the author.
This rough draft MUST be submitted with the final draft.
Remember, essays also MUST be submitted to SafeAssign in order to be graded.
